Rhode Island

plate

As of 2026, Rhode Island's current standard passenger license plate features a updated design that replaced the previous "wave" plates, transitioning from embossed to flat, digitized graphics. The new design, rolled out beginning in 2023, maintains elements of the "Ocean State" branding with a refreshed, cleaner aesthetic.

Key Features of the Current (Post-2023) RI Plate:

Design: A "flat" plate design (non-embossed) with a revised, modern aesthetic that retains the "Ocean State" theme.

Text: Features "Rhode Island" at the top and "ocean state" at the bottom.

Graphics: The design often includes the traditional anchor logo and a stylized blue, white, and gray background meant to evoke a wave or ocean motif.

Issuance: The Rhode Island Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) began issuing these new plates in 2023, requiring them for new registrations and during renewal cycles.

Validity: While the new design is standard, older "WAVE" plates (introduced in 1996) are phased out upon renewal.

Other Active Plate Types:

Charity/Specialty Plates: Popular options include the Atlantic Shark Institute plate (featuring a Mako shark) and the Gaspee Days plate.

Veteran Plates: Specialized plates for veterans, including Purple Heart and Gold Star families.

Commercial/Combination: These remain available for trucks and work vehicles.

Front and rear plates are required for most passenger vehicles in Rhode Island.
