As of 2026, New Mexico primarily issues three standard passenger license plate designs, all requiring only a single rear plate. The options include the classic yellow with red lettering, the turquoise centennial plate with yellow text, and a black "Chile Capital" plate, all featuring "Land of Enchantment" and "USA".

Current Standard Plate Options (As of 2026):

Yellow/Red (Yucca) Plate: The traditional design, featuring a yellow background, dark red lettering, a yucca plant, and the "Land of Enchantment" slogan.

Turquoise (Centennial) Plate: A distinctive turquoise background with yellow text, featuring the Zia sun symbol. It features the "Land of Enchantment" slogan and "USA".

Chile Plate: Introduced in 2017, this plate is black with yellow characters, red/green chile pepper graphics on the left, and reads "Chile Capital of the World".

Key Features:

Single Plate: Only a rear license plate is required.

"USA" Designation: New Mexico is the only state that includes "USA" on its license plates to distinguish it from the country of Mexico.

Plate to Owner: License plates stay with the owner, not the vehicle, when sold.

Renewal Stickers: Stickers are black on white, issued annually.

Specialty Plates:

Collegiate: UNM, NMSU, and NM Tech options are available.

Other: Options include Pet Care (spay/neuter), Route 66, and various veteran/military plates.
