plate

The current standard Montana license plate, introduced in 2010, features a minimalist blue background with white lettering, featuring the state outline, the "Treasure State" slogan, and a bison skull separator between the county number and plate serial number. It has a retro design with clear, block lettering.

Key Features of the Standard Plate:

Design: Solid blue background with white text and a white outline of the state.

Text: "MONTANA" at the top, with "Treasure State" below it.

Numbering: The plate begins with a 1- or 2-digit number (1–56) representing the county of registration, followed by a bison skull separator (dot), and a 3- to 5-digit serial number.

Updates: In 2025, some standard plates updated formatting to include a bison skull separator with the county code.

Alternatives: Residents can also choose from replicas of 1991, 2000, and 2006, or 2009 "Big Sky Country" bases.

Important Notes:

County Codes: The first number signifies the county, where 1 is Butte-Silver Bow, 6 is Gallatin, and 4 is Missoula, for example.

Optional Plates: Montana offers hundreds of specialized, sponsored, and college-themed plates (like the University of Montana Grizzlies or Montana State Bobcats).

Validity: The plate often features a white month sticker and a colored year sticker.
