Starting May 1, 2025, Maine is replacing the 25-year-old "Chickadee" plate with a new standard "Pine Tree plate," featuring a stylized white pine tree and a blue North Star on a white background, inspired by the 1901 state flag. This new plate, featuring blue lettering and a minimalist design, will be phased in during registration renewals through April 2026.
Key details of the new, current Maine plates:
Design: A minimalist, modern design representing the Pine Tree State.
Appearance: White background with a green stylized pine tree and a blue North Star, accompanied by blue numbers and letters.
"No Tree" Option: For passenger cars only, a "No Tree" option is available, which is a plain white plate with blue and green lettering and no image.
Rollout: The switch from the Chickadee plate to the Pine Tree plate occurs upon registration renewal between May 2025 and April 2026.
Cost: The new plate is issued at no cost during the mandatory replacement period.
The new plates were designed to improve readability and reflectivity for public safety, replacing the older, worn-out chickadee plates.
