From every state excluding truck, motorcycle, bus, government, and specialty.
The primary standard Indiana license plate features a red covered bridge against a scenic background with a blue serial number. However, Indiana currently offers three standard-issue designs that can be chosen at no additional cost:
Standard Plate Options:
Covered Bridge: The "Standard Passenger" design features a red covered bridge, a grassy field, and the Indiana BMV website at the bottom.
In God We Trust: This plate features a centralized American flag pattern with a gold torch and the motto "In God We Trust".
Blackout Plate: A high-contrast design with a solid black background and white lettering, officially authorized as a standard option starting in 2024.
Visual & Technical Details:
Did you know? Indiana is the only state that requires license plates for Amish buggies.
Identification Layout:
Serial Number: Typically dark blue or white (on blackout) characters arranged in a random series of numbers and letters.
County ID: A sticker in the bottom right corner displays the county of registration.
Expiration Stickers: The top left corner shows the month and day, while the top right corner shows the expiration year.
Registration Cycle:
Indiana follows a 7-year replacement cycle for physical license plates.
You must display all text and stickers clearly; using license plate frames that obscure any information is illegal.
